Joni Sternbach, Abandoned

Dark Spring Press is proud to introduce this very limited number of handmade books by New York photographer, Joni Sternbach. Famous for taking portraits of surfers around the world using a large format wet-plate camera and a portable darkroom, Joni has applied the same photographic process to this body of work. For Abandoned, she scouts locations that are close to or directly on the water. These images reveal the history of our industrial past and the impact it’s had on the landscape.

This first edition of Abandoned made it's debut at the International Center of Photography Photo Book Fest in September of 2024. We are excited to offer only a handful of copies for sale here on our website for those of you who didn't make it to the festival!

The small soft bound book is 5 x 4 inches in size and contains 16 images printed on double-sided lustre paper. It's bound and stiched by hand at the Dark Spring Press studio in Tucson, AZ. Each of the five limited edition copies is signed by the photographer and includes a signed inkjet print on luster paper. Select your choice of print at checkout.

“It is at the edge of the land and sea that the mystery of an abandoned past is revealed. Structures that have long ago lost their function are now emblematic of a vanished industrial age. These structures and remnants represent the last stand of human effort, most poignantly seen through decay and a return to nature."
- Abandoned, Joni Sternbach
